Interview with “Los Tucanes de Tijuana”

Hello and thank you for visiting ESM’s world, my world.

Today, I have prepared an interview with the legendary Mexican regional norteño group they are called “Los Tucanes de Tijuana.”

Los Tucanes de Tijuana began their singing career since April 13, 1987 in Tijuana, B.C. Their love songs, cumbias and corridos have been their best credentials and have placed the band in the first places of the Billboards, Latin Grammys and BMI Awards, among others. This norteño group has been able to cross borders and reach countries that others only dream of. Los Tucanes de Tijuana are considered a worldwide phenomenon, and have reached places like: United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Chile, Panama, Russia, Venezuela and many other countries.

Here is the interview, enjoy it:

I saw a video that in Russia there were more than 25,000 people and they were playing “La Chona.” That’s something very nice.

Q: What did you guys as a group feel that this song is a global success?

A: Well the truth is we feel a great emotion of enjoy the kind of atmosphere that “La Chona” has caused worldwide. Because, it’s already global! And we’re happy to include that “expression” in our repertoire. “La Chona” is a “viral” song worldwide and we are very happy that “La Chona” was the song that the people chose to have fun in the World Cup. Also, the teacher who translated it into English to give her English class a lesson through music with “La Chona,” gave us a lot of emotion. Even knowning that other artists of other genres are dancing “La Chona Challenge” is very satisfying for us, as creators of “La Chona.”

Q: Have you guys done “La Chona challenge?”

A: No, we have not done it yet but the idea is to do it at the end. We are preparing a video; an official video this is being planned with the office; the producer and the label are preparing the video to culminate this “La Chona challenge” and do something more international; but a video will be created by us.

Q: What is the article, that each of you carries, when you leave your house and do not let it go anywhere?

A: The cell phone … in chorus all right? The cell phone!!! 1.2.3: The cell phone … Hahaha.

Q: Many people have identified with your songs and corridos, what do you feel as a composer, to connect in such a way with your audience?

A: For me it is a great honor to achieve that because, personally that is the objective: that people identify with our music. That feels part “of”; to be able to entertain them, to cheer them up, to take them out of the monotony, of everyday stress with our music. The truth is that it is a great honor and that is submission: entertain, have fun; we are not education, we are entertainment; That is what we are looking for: for people to entertain. We do not like to be influential, nor to influence the mentality of people, but, if at some point we influence, we want it to be positive, and I believe that with music, the influence is always positive.

Q: Many couples have dedicated your love song to someone and they have fallen in love. Do you believe that?

A: Yes, that is the idea with the romantic music: unite couples, promote love, and I think we have achieved it, many people have fallen in love with our music.

Q: What was the first memory you have as a group, to say: “This memory has been the most important of our career, or our time? One that everyone shares.

A: “If there is one; I think, maybe, if I’m not mistaken, it was when we won the Latin Grammy. We had been nominated, at that time, around ten times, and it was our turn to be at the ceremonies; the short list came out and the artists who were there and us always crossing our fingers they would say the winners are: Marco Antonio Solis; he won it, Joan Sebastian; he won it, Pepe Aguilar; but when they said: “Los Tucanes de Tijuana,” … we won it !!! I do not know but here is our manager who will not let me lie, and he said: “You hit a jump”, I mean: A Super jump! It was a moment of great emotion that I think we all share as one of the best.

Q: Of all your compositions, what is your favorite and why?

A: My favorite song is “Amor Platonico”because it’s a song that personally, I like what it says, I like the melody, I like the lyrics and I love how people know it, how people sing along, as people identify with that song. That it is my favorite, although of course, that there is a special fondness for: “La Chona,” “El Tucanazo,” “Mundo de Amor,” and talking about corridos: “El Centenario,” El Papa de Los Pollitos,” ” Jefe X “… all those corridos, but without a doubt for me: “Amor Platonico”is my favorite song.”

Q: What will we expect from “Los Tucanes” in 2019?

A: We’re going to meet another year. Hahaha. One more year of career. Well come many things as I said: we are preparing a “Live Disc,” we are preparing the video of “La Chona Challenge,” we are preparing another Corridos Disc, we are preparing many projects, a tour to Chile. We have many invitations to go to work in Central America and South America. We have only worked in countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia and Chile but we are missing several countries that we want to visit next year.

My Personal comment:

Well congratulations and thank you very much for the interview. I have noticed that you are a group that can enter other parts of the world that other singers have not entered and for that “Congratulations.”

A: Thank you very much for the comment and in fact we always try to make music with that mentality of transcending and of reaching other cultures, to other countries, and little by little we are moving forward. Thank you.
